Why Do You Feel Worse After Scrolling? Understanding Social Media and Mental Health

Have you ever picked up your phone for a few minutes, only to put it down feeling more stressed, anxious, or discouraged?

If so, you’re not alone.

Social media helps us stay connected, learn new things, and share important moments. It can also introduce us to supportive communities and mental health resources. But sometimes, it can leave us feeling worse than when we opened the app.

One reason is that social media often shows a “highlight reel.” We see vacations, celebrations, promotions, and exciting milestones, but we rarely see the challenges happening behind the scenes. Comparing our everyday lives to someone else’s best moments can affect our mood without us even realizing it.

The next time you put your phone down, take a moment to check in with yourself.

  • Do I feel better or worse than I did before I started scrolling?
  • Did I learn something or make a meaningful connection?
  • Am I feeling inspired or am I comparing myself to others?
  • Is it time to put my phone down and take a break?

There are no right or wrong answers. The goal is simply to notice how social media affects your well-being.

If you find that social media is regularly affecting your mood, try making a few small changes. Follow accounts that educate or inspire you. Take breaks throughout the day. Spend time with friends and family in person when you can. Even small changes can make a difference.
