How to Check In on Someone You Care About

Sometimes, you may notice that a friend, family member, coworker, or neighbor does not seem like themselves. They may seem withdrawn, overwhelmed, or less interested in things they usually enjoy.

It can be hard to know what to say or do. Many people worry about saying the wrong thing. But reaching out with care can make a difference.

Five Ways to Offer Support

If you are concerned about someone, these five action steps can help guide your response:

Ask. Start a conversation and let them know you care.

Be There. Listen without judgment. You do not need to have all the answers.

Help Keep Them Safe. If someone talks about harming themselves or feels unsafe, take those concerns seriously.

Help Them Connect. Encourage them to reach out to a trusted support person, mental health professional, or crisis resource.

Follow Up. Check in again. A simple text or phone call can remind someone they are not alone.

Sometimes, a person may show signs that they need immediate support. Talking about feeling hopeless or having no reason to live, withdrawing from others, or showing extreme mood changes can all be warning signs.

If you are concerned about someone’s safety, do not wait to reach out for help.

If you or someone you know needs support, Netcare’s Crisis Phone Line is available 24/7 at 614-276-CARE (2273). A trained clinician is always available to listen. You can also call or text 988 anytime to reach the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline.

Checking in may feel like a small act, but it can remind someone that they do not have to face life’s challenges alone.
